Dear Citizens of Avoyelles Parish,
As we approach the upcoming election, I’d like a moment to talk with you about the renewal of the 10-mill property tax and the ½-cent sales tax that support Avoyelles Parish Schools.
These are not new taxes. They are existing funding sources that our community has approved in the past and that are set to expire soon. The question before voters is whether to continue them.
These local funds are a significant part of how we keep our schools running each day. They help cover salaries and benefits for our employees, classroom supplies, instructional materials, technology, utilities, and other operational costs. They also support maintenance and repairs, things like roofing, air conditioning systems, and general facility upkeep that keep our buildings safe and functional for students and staff.
Like every household in our parish, our school system has felt the impact of rising costs. Utilities, materials, insurance, and technology are all more expensive than they were just a few years ago. Continuing these existing funding sources helps us maintain stability and avoid disruptions to the services our schools and students rely on.
Our teachers and staff work hard every day to serve the children of Avoyelles Parish. Retaining quality employees and keeping our schools in good condition requires steady, dependable funding. These renewals help provide that stability.
It is also important to note that these measures would continue the current tax rates. They do not increase the existing millage or sales tax rate. However, if not renewed, those funding sources would expire.
Strong schools matter to everyone, not just families with children currently enrolled. They contribute to the strength of our community, support local workforce development, and play a role in property values and overall parish growth.
I encourage you to review the information available on our website, including the tax calculator and example breakdowns, and make the decision you believe is best for Avoyelles Parish.
Thank you for your time, your engagement, and your continued support in our schools.
Sincerely,
Karen L. Tutor
Superintendent, Avoyelles Parish Schools
