To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, Avoyelles Parish School District will recognize National School Lunch Week from October 12-16, 2015. The theme, “School Lunch Snapshot” will feature events and activities that promote the importance of balancing healthy eating with physical activity and exercise. “School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, and less fat and sodium” said Jenny Welch, Food Service Supervisor. “National School Lunch Week is the perfect time to celebrate all of the healthy options we’re serving every day in Avoyelles Parish schools”.
Child Nutrition Services
Children need a healthy well-balanced diet to promote health, academic achievement, and growth. The Avoyelles Parish School Board Child Nutrition department serves nutritious, appetizing meals to all students at no cost to the students’ family. This year ALL students attending Avoyelles Parish Public Schools will receive FREE breakfast and lunch without having to complete a lunch application. The entire Avoyelles Parish School District will be participating in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2015-2016 school year. CEP provides an alternative approach for offering school meals to local education agencies and schools in low income areas, instead of collecting individual applications for free and reduced priced meals. The CEP uses information from other programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Temporary Assistance Program for Needy Families (TANF) instead of paper applications. It is the hope of the Child Nutrition Department to increase the overall participation of breakfast and lunch and to continue serving nutritious meals to all of our students.
The Child Nutrition department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to student’s health, well-being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices. School meals in this district follow the recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans and offer healthy choices to our students. Today’s lunches include fruits and vegetables offered daily, increased whole grains, limits on calories, fat and sodium based on student’s age, and fat-free and low-fat milk every day.
Adult Meals: APSB staff may purchase meals at $1.80 for breakfast and $3.60 for lunch. Payment may be made to accounts by check or cash. Charging adult meals is prohibited.
Visitor Meals- Visitors may purchase meals for $2.00 for breakfast and $4.00 for lunch at the time of meal service. Payment may be cash or money order.
Diet Modification- The Diet Prescription form must be completed by the student’s physician and signed. Incomplete forms will not be accepted. Diet Prescriptions will not be carried over from one school year to the next; an updated form must be completed annually and submitted before modifications can be provided. All student medical information is confidential and will be used only for the purpose of providing the student with appropriate nutritional care.
